Rabbi Steve Greenberg on Queer Kiddushin

Last weekend at the Nehirim retreat Rabbi Steve Greenberg gave a talk on what Jewish same-sex marriage ceremonies might look like. I was not as interested in the halakhic reasoning to read this into the tradition because as you might guess if you read this blog with any regularity, you'll know that while I consider myself an observant Jew, it's because I observe from a distance. However, I was very interested in his search for a Jewish mythic metaphor to give meaning and resonance to our relationships in a particular way, finding a place for our relationships within the work of tikkun olam.

I took a very shaky video of the talk. If you're interested, it's a little more than an hour. But it is rich with provocative and thoughtful ideas. I don't necessarily come out in the same place he does, but I feel enormous gratitude to him for leading the way in this area. The file takes a while to load because it's a big file. Be patient, and be sure to double click on the box to start the quicktime vid.
