The Church of Stop Shopping should have a new saint: Katsuhiro Furusawa, a former 60's activist has found a new cause in Japan. Not only have the Japanese adopted odd western holidays like Valentine's Day, they've made them their own and extended them.
Thus, in Sadie Hawkins style, V Day in Japan is when women give chocolates to men they are interested in. And one month later, the candy biz invented White Day, when men give women white chocolate in return to the women, presumably as a sign that they are interested. I wouldn't want to have to
wait a month, but I don't have that celebrated Japanese gamman.
Furusawa gets it. He knows that White Day is just a candy-assed capitalist plot:
All the mass media does is dehumanize those who aren't in love. It makes them worthless," the activist says. "But the love the mass media is talking about is actually commercial love. They're using love to turn people into consumers.
Watch out Furusawa-san. Hallmark may hire a hit man if you keep it up.
